Mount Walter is a tall mountain peak in the state of New Mexico, U.S.. It stands at 13,141 feet (about 4,000 meters) above sea level. Even though it's very high, it's often not seen as its own separate mountain. This is because it's super close to Wheeler Peak, which is the highest mountain in New Mexico. Mount Walter is only about 0.4 miles (0.6 kilometers) away from Wheeler Peak.
Where is Mount Walter?
Mount Walter is located in the Taos Mountains. This mountain range is part of the larger Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are a subrange of the huge Rocky Mountains that stretch across North America.
This peak is also found within the Wheeler Peak Wilderness. This is a special protected area inside the Carson National Forest. It means the area is kept wild and natural for everyone to enjoy.
Climbing Mount Walter
Mount Walter is not usually climbed on its own. Most people who reach its top are actually on their way to or from Wheeler Peak. The easiest way to get to Mount Walter is by following the Bull-of-the-Woods Trail. This trail offers amazing views of the surrounding wilderness.
