Exploring Mount Washington
Mount Washington is a significant part of the Snake Range mountains. This range stretches across eastern Nevada. Being inside a national park means the area around Mount Washington is protected. This helps preserve its natural beauty and wildlife.
A Special Project Near the Summit
In 2001, a group called The Long Now Foundation bought some land close to Mount Washington's summit. This land is next to Great Basin National Park. The foundation had a very interesting idea for this spot.
The Clock of the Long Now
The Long Now Foundation wanted to build something called the Clock of the Long Now. This clock is designed to last for 10,000 years! It's meant to be a symbol of long-term thinking. The foundation chose this remote mountain area because it's a stable and quiet place for such a unique project.
The land purchased was about 180.3 acres (73.0 ha). It included several old mining claims from 1916. These claims are legal rights to mine a specific piece of land. The announcement about this land purchase was made in nearby towns like Baker and Ely, Nevada. Local officials were excited about the project.
