Mountain Center is a small community in the San Jacinto Mountains of California. It's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own city government. This type of place is called an unincorporated community and a census-designated place. It is located in Riverside County.

Where is Mountain Center Located?

Mountain Center is found where two important roads, State Route 74 and State Route 243, meet. It's also inside the southern part of the San Bernardino National Forest.

This community is just north of Lake Hemet. You can find it between the towns of Hemet and Palm Desert. It's also south of Idyllwild and southeast of Riverside. Riverside is the main city for Riverside County.

Mountain Center is about 4,518 feet (1,377 meters) above sea level. Even though it's not a city, it has its own post office with the ZIP code 92561.

Land and Water in Mountain Center

The United States Census Bureau says that Mountain Center covers about 1.9 square miles (4.9 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.09%, is water.

Lake Hemet is the only large body of water in the Mountain Center area. You might still see signs of past wildfires, like the Mountain Fire and the Cranston Fire, in the community.

Who Lives in Mountain Center?

In 2010, a total of 63 people lived in Mountain Center. This means there were about 33 people living in each square mile.

Most of the people living there, about 95%, were White. There were also a few people who were Native American or Asian. About 24% of the people were of Hispanic or Latino background.

Getting Around Mountain Center

A group called Forest Folk helps people get around. They run the Idyllwild Shuttle service. This shuttle can pick people up and drop them off right at their doors. This service is supported by a grant from the Riverside County Transportation Commission.
