Mountain View was officially planned and laid out in 1888. It got its name because of the amazing views from its high location. A post office has been open in Mountain View since 1879.

Mountain View is found in the Missouri Ozarks region. It is in the northeastern part of Howell County. The city sits along US Route 60. It is about 13 miles east of Willow Springs. It is also about 11 miles west of Birch Tree. Birch Tree is in nearby Shannon County.

2024 Tornado Event
On May 26, 2024, a strong tornado hit the northern side of Mountain View. This tornado caused a lot of damage. Three houses were badly damaged. One manufactured home was completely destroyed. One person was injured during the storm.
