The Story of Mr. Magoo
Mr. Quincy Magoo (Leslie Nielsen) is a very rich man who owns a factory that makes canned vegetables. He is also extremely near-sighted, which means he can't see things clearly without his glasses. This often leads to funny mix-ups and adventures.
The Stolen Ruby
One night, Mr. Magoo goes to a party at a museum. While he is there, his nephew, Waldo (Matt Keeslar), meets a woman named Stacey Sampanahoditra (Jennifer Garner) and likes her. Later that night, two jewel thieves, Luanne LeSeur (Kelly Lynch) and Bob Morgan (Nick Chinlund), steal a beautiful ruby called "The Star of Kuristan" from the museum. They try to escape on a boat.
Fishing Fun and a Lost Gem
At the same time, Mr. Magoo and his dog, Angus, are fishing in the same area. Luanne and Bob start arguing, and during their fight, the ruby falls out of their boat. It lands right into Mr. Magoo's boat, but he doesn't even notice it! Bob tries to get the ruby back but falls into the water.
Agents on the Case
Back at the museum, Stacey and the curator send two special agents to find the ruby. These are Gustav Anders (Ernie Hudson) from the CIA and Chuck Stupak (Stephen Tobolowsky) from the FBI. They think Mr. Magoo might have stolen the ruby. Stacey tells them that the Magoos are going to the opera that night.
Opera Antics
Anders and Stupak go to the opera to watch Mr. Magoo. At the opera, Mr. Magoo meets Luanne, who pretends to be a reporter named Prunella Pagliachi. Mr. Magoo likes her right away. Agent Stupak tries to sneak onto the stage to look for clues, but Mr. Magoo accidentally hits him with a large tool during the show.
A Visit to Magoo's House
The next morning, Luanne tricks Mr. Magoo into taking her to his house. She pretends to have an injured ankle. Agent Stupak finds a notebook with Luanne's fingerprints. He realizes who Mr. Magoo is with. Stupak and Anders go to Mr. Magoo's house. Stupak sneaks inside to search for the ruby.
The Chase is On!
Mr. Magoo and Luanne arrive at the house, and Stupak hides. Bob also sneaks into the house and finds the ruby. When he is caught, he steals Mr. Magoo's special car, a Studebaker. The Magoos and Luanne chase after him in Mr. Magoo's "Eggplant-mobile." Bob gets away and takes the ruby to his boss, Austin Cloquet (Malcolm McDowell).
The Auction and Escape
Austin Cloquet plans an auction for his criminal friends to sell the ruby. Mr. Magoo disguises himself as a famous thief named Ortega Peru and joins the auction, which is held in a swimming pool. But his disguise is ruined when a fake tattoo washes off in the water. Luanne then crashes the auction, steals the ruby, and escapes on a snowmobile.
The Hunt Continues
The government agents arrest Austin and his friends. Mr. Magoo chases Luanne on an ironing board and ends up in the middle of a women's skiing race. Waldo and Angus sneak out of the criminal hideout. They catch up with Mr. Magoo and help him track down the ruby.
Brazil Adventure
Angus sees Luanne disguised as an old woman. He spills her purse, which gives Mr. Magoo and Waldo a clue about where Luanne is going. The Magoos follow Luanne to Brazil. Waldo spies on the real Ortega (Miguel Ferrer) and his friends. Mr. Magoo then steals a wedding dress from Ortega's girlfriend, Rosita, and finds himself at a wedding.
The Ruby is Returned
Mr. Magoo steals the ruby from Ortega. He is then chased by Ortega's men, the government agents, and Luanne. Magoo gets trapped on a raft heading for a waterfall. But he cleverly flips the raft over, using it like a parachute to float safely down. Finally, he and Waldo return the ruby to the museum. The government arrests Ortega, Luanne, and the other criminals. Mr. Magoo and Angus go home after their big adventure.
