Malcolm McDowell (born Malcolm John Taylor; 13 June 1943) is a famous English actor. He first became known for playing Mick Travis in the movie if.... (1968). He played this character again in O Lucky Man! (1973) and Britannia Hospital (1982). His acting in if.... led director Stanley Kubrick to choose him for the main role of Alex in A Clockwork Orange (1971). This role is one of his most famous.

McDowell has been in many other well-known films. These include The Raging Moon (1971), Voyage of the Damned (1976), and Time After Time (1979). He also appeared in Star Trek Generations (1994), where he played Dr. Tolian Soran. Later, he played Dr. Samuel Loomis in the horror movie Halloween (2007) and its sequel Halloween II (2009).

On television, McDowell has had many important roles. He was in Entourage (2005–2011) and Heroes (2006–2007). He also starred in Franklin & Bash (2011–2014) and Mozart in the Jungle (2014–2018). Since 2022, he has played Patrick "Pop" Critch in the Canadian show Son of a Critch. He is also a talented voice actor for cartoons, movies, and video games.

McDowell has won an Evening Standard British Film Award. He has also been nominated for Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In 2012, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This is a special honor for actors.

Early Life and Acting Start

Malcolm John Taylor was born on 13 June 1943 in Horsforth, England. His mother, Edna, was a hotelier, and his father, Charles, was an officer in the Royal Air Force. Malcolm has two sisters, Gloria and Judy. His nephew, actor Alexander Siddig, is Gloria's son.

His family moved to different places, including Bridlington and Liverpool. As a teenager, Malcolm worked in a nut factory and at his father's pub. He started taking acting classes while still in school. Later, he moved to London to train as an actor at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

McDowell began his acting career as an extra with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He made his first film appearance in if.... (1968). In this movie, he played Mick Travis, a rebellious school student. This film is considered a very important British movie. The British Film Institute called if.... the 12th greatest British film of the 20th century.

His role in if.... caught the eye of director Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick then cast McDowell as Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange (1971). In this film, Alex is a young, antisocial character who undergoes a special treatment by the government. McDowell received great praise for his performance. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.

McDowell worked with director Lindsay Anderson again in O Lucky Man! (1973) and Britannia Hospital (1982). O Lucky Man! was inspired by McDowell's own experiences as a coffee salesman. In the 1970s, he often appeared on British television. He starred in Aces High (1976) and Voyage of the Damned (1976). He also played the main character in Caligula (1979).

He made his first Hollywood movie as H. G. Wells in Time After Time (1979). McDowell has often played characters who are villains. He once said that playing villains is only about half of his career.

In 1983, McDowell played the Wolf in "Little Red Riding Hood" for the show Faerie Tale Theatre. His wife at the time, Mary Steenburgen, played Little Red Riding Hood. In 1994, he appeared in Star Trek Generations. He played Dr. Tolian Soran, who killed Captain Kirk. Some Star Trek fans even sent him funny "death threats" because of this!

McDowell also appeared in several computer games. He was Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn in the Wing Commander series. His role in Wing Commander III helped the game series switch to using live-action scenes.

In 1995, he co-starred in the science fiction film Tank Girl. He played the villain Dr. Kesslee. This character was the evil director of a company that controlled the world's water supply. In 2000, he appeared as a live-action narrator in an episode of South Park. This episode was a funny version of the novel Great Expectations.

McDowell played himself in the movie The Player. He also worked with director Robert Altman again in The Company (2003). In this film, he played "Mr. A.", a fictional director of a ballet company.

In 2007, he played the villain Mr. Linderman in the first season of the TV series Heroes. He returned to this role in the third season. He also played Terrence McQuewick on Entourage. In 2007, McDowell made a documentary film called Never Apologize. It was about his experiences working with director Lindsay Anderson.

McDowell played Dr. Samuel Loomis in Rob Zombie's remakes of Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009). In 2009, he appeared in the music video "Snuff" by the band Slipknot. He also played Satan in the comedy film Suing the Devil (2011).

In 2011, McDowell joined the cast of the TV series Franklin & Bash. He also appeared in the Academy Award-winning film The Artist. On 16 March 2012, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His friend, actor Gary Oldman, was there to celebrate and said McDowell inspired him to act.

In 2013, he won Best Actor at the Los Angeles Movie Awards for his role in The Employer. He also played King Henry II of England in the film Richard the Lionheart. Since 2022, he has played the grandfather in the Canadian TV series Son of a Critch.

McDowell has lent his voice to many animated shows, films, and video games. He was the narrator for the documentary The Compleat Beatles in 1982. He voiced Lord Maliss in Happily Ever After (1989). He also voiced Zarm in Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

He is well-known for voicing the Superman villain Metallo in Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited. He also voiced Mad Mod on Teen Titans. In 2008, he voiced Dr. Calico in Disney's Bolt. He also had a recurring role as Grandpa Fletcher on Phineas and Ferb.

In video games, McDowell voiced President John Henry Eden in Fallout 3. He was also the voice of Jorhan Stahl in Killzone 3. He is the voice for the main villain Molag Bal in the game The Elder Scrolls Online. He also voiced Dr. Monty in Call of Duty: Black Ops III.

McDowell hosts Fangoria's Dreadtime Stories. This is a monthly series of radio dramas with mystery, horror, and dark humor themes. He also provided the voice for Triton, a ship's computer, in the science-fiction short film Oceanus: Act One (2015). In 2020, he read poetry inspired by ancient Roman writings. He also guest-starred in the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Pet the Rock" as Pervical.

Personal Life

Malcolm McDowell has been married three times. He first married actress Margot Bennett in 1975. They divorced in 1980. He then married actress Mary Steenburgen in 1980. They had two children together: Lilly (born 1981) and filmmaker Charlie McDowell (born 1983). They divorced in 1990. He married his third wife, Kelley Kuhr, in 1991. They have three sons.

McDowell became a fan of Liverpool F.C. (a football team) when he moved to Liverpool as a child. He spent a lot of his childhood watching games at their stadium, Anfield. He still supports the team today.
