Mridula Garg (born in 1938) is a famous Indian writer. She writes in both Hindi and English. She has published more than 30 books in Hindi. These include novels, collections of short stories, plays, and essays. Many of her works have also been translated into English. She is a respected writer and has received the Sahitya Akademi Award.

Early Life and Education

Mridula Garg grew up in Delhi, India. She lived with her parents, five sisters, and a brother. She started writing stories when she was just a child. After finishing school, she studied economics. In 1960, she earned her master's degree in economics. She then taught economics at the University of Delhi for three years.

Her Journey as a Writer

Mridula Garg published her first novel, Uske Hisse Ki Dhoop, in 1975. Her books often explore themes about women's lives and experiences. She once explained that her writing shows women who are strong and don't feel guilty about their choices. She believes every woman can be unique and powerful.

Writing for Newspapers and Magazines

Mridula Garg has also been a regular writer for many publications. She wrote columns about the environment, issues affecting women, child labor, and literature. For five years, from 1985 to 1990, she wrote a column called Parivar for Ravivar magazine. She also wrote a column called Kataksh (which means Satire) for India Today (Hindi) for seven years, from 2003 to 2010.

Traveling and Sharing Her Work

Mridula Garg has traveled widely to share her writing and ideas. In 1990, she was a research associate at the Center for South Asian Studies in the University of California-Berkeley, USA. She has been invited to speak about Hindi literature and women's rights at universities and conferences. She has visited countries like former Yugoslavia (in 1988), the USA (in 1990 and 1991), Germany (in 1993), Japan (in 2003), Italy (in 2011), Denmark and Russia (in 2012). During these trips, she gave lectures and read from her books.

  • Vyas Sanman, for her excellent Hindi novel Kathgulab (2004)
  • Uske Hisse ki Dhoop (novel) and Jadoo Ka Kaleen (play) were awarded by the M.P. Sahitya Parishad in 1975 and 1993.
  • Miljul Mann (novel) received the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award (2013)
