Mridula Garg (born in 1938) is a famous Indian writer. She writes amazing stories and books in both Hindi and English. She has written more than 30 books, including exciting novels, short stories, plays, and essays. Many of her books have even been translated into English for more readers to enjoy. She also won a very important prize called the Sahitya Akademi Award for her great writing.

About Mridula Garg

Mridula Garg grew up in Delhi, India. She lived with her parents, five sisters, and one brother. She loved writing stories from a very young age. After finishing school, she studied economics. In 1960, she earned her master's degree in economics. She even taught economics at the University of Delhi for three years.

Her Journey as a Writer

Mridula Garg published her first novel, Uske Hisse Ki Dhoop, in 1975. This was the start of her long and successful writing career. She also wrote regular columns for magazines. For five years, from 1985 to 1990, she wrote a column called Parivar for Ravivar magazine. Later, she wrote a funny column called Kataksh (which means Satire) for India Today (Hindi) for seven years, from 2003 to 2010.

Her books and stories are so good that they have been translated into many different languages. These include German, Czech, Japanese, and English. This means people all over the world can read her wonderful works!

Mridula Garg has also traveled a lot to share her ideas about Hindi literature. In 1990, she was a research associate at the Center for South Asian Studies in the University of California-Berkeley, USA. She has been invited to speak at universities and conferences in many countries. She visited places like former Yugoslavia (in 1988), the USA (in 1990 and 1991), Germany (in 1993), and Japan (in 2003). She also visited Italy (in 2011), Denmark and Russia (in 2012). During these trips, she gave talks and read parts of her books to audiences.

Mridula Garg has received many special awards for her amazing writing. These awards show how much her work is appreciated.

  • Uske Hisse ki Dhoop (novel) and Jadoo Ka Kaleen (play) both received awards from the M.P. Sahitya Parishad (in 1975 and 1993)
  • Her novel Miljul Mann won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award (2013)
  • Mira Smriti Samman award for her important contributions to modern Hindi literature (2016)
  • Ram Manohar Lohia Samman from U.P Hindi Sansthan (2016)
  • She received an honorary D. Litt. degree from ITM University, Gwalior (2016)
