A wildlife management area is a special place set aside to protect nature and provide a safe home for different kinds of animals and plants.

Mud Lake in Dubuque County

This area used to be a regular lake. However, it became part of the river's bay after Lock and Dam No. 11 was built. A lock and dam system helps control the water level of a river, making it easier for boats to travel and sometimes creating larger water areas. This former lake is now part of the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge, which is another protected area for wildlife.

Mud Lake in Linn County

This particular Mud Lake is an Oxbow lake of the Cedar River. An oxbow lake forms when a river changes its path over time, leaving behind a U-shaped body of water that looks a bit like an ox's yoke. This lake is located within the Chain Lakes Game Management Area, another important place for protecting nature.
