About Mugarra
The Aramotz massif is on the western edge of the Urkiola mountain range. Mugarra is like the last mountain in a line of peaks, including Anboto, Alluitz, Aitz Txiki, and Untxillaitz. It marks the eastern end of the Aramotz massif.
Mugarra's Special Features
Mugarra is made of huge limestone rock. If you look closely, you might even find fossils of ancient seashells! The southern side of the mountain has a giant cliff, about 300 meters (984 feet) high. This cliff is home to many vultures, with about 60 pairs nesting there.
The northern side, which faces the town of Durango, is very steep. But it doesn't have a cliff. Instead, it's covered with beautiful beech trees and Cantabrian Holm Oaks.
Rock Climbing and the Quarry
The top ridge of Mugarra has many routes for rock climbing. However, climbing is not allowed here. This rule helps protect the vultures and their homes.
Sadly, a large quarry is slowly digging away at this limestone ridge. This causes harm to the mountain and is very close to a protected natural area.
Getting to the Top
You can start your climb from the town of Mañaria, which is 181 meters (594 feet) high. From there, a good path leads you to the Mugarrekolanda mountain pass, which is 760 meters (2,493 feet) high.
From the Mugarrekolanda pass, it's an easy walk to the very top of Mugarra from the west. You can also reach the eastern part of the ridge through a break called Atxurkulu, which is 662 meters (2,172 feet) high. The whole climb usually takes about two hours.
