He also tried to bring the throne back to the family of Sultan Muhammad Ali.

Sultan Muhyiddin's Rule (1673-1690)

How Muhyiddin Became Sultan

After his father-in-law, Sultan Muhammad Ali, was killed, Pengiran Bongsu Muhyiddin received an important title. This title was Pengiran Bendahara Seri Maharaja Permaisuara. Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin gave him this title. Muhyiddin was the younger brother of Sultan Abdul Jalilul Jabbar. He was also Sultan Muhammad Ali's nephew and son-in-law. Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin gave him the title to make Sultan Muhammad Ali's supporters happy.

Starting the Rebellion

At first, things were calm in Brunei. But many people were still upset with Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin. Some supporters of Sultan Muhammad Ali asked Muhyiddin to help remove the current Sultan. Muhyiddin first thought it was not the right thing to do. But he later agreed to help overthrow Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin.

Muhyiddin and his soldiers began by causing trouble. They jabbed their spears into the palace and nearby homes. This created a lot of noise and fear. Many rebels worked at the palace, which made their attacks easier.

The Brunei Civil War

Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin moved his main government area. He went from Kota Batu to Pulau Cermin. This move was suggested by Pengiran Bendahara Muhyiddin. The idea was that Abdul Hakkul Mubin would stay there during the crisis.

But Muhyiddin had other plans. He moved to Kampong Ayer and declared himself the 15th Sultan of Brunei. This started Brunei's first civil war. Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin's soldiers were surprised. They wondered why Muhyiddin had not joined them on the island. They were shocked when he raised the yellow flag of the Sultan for himself.

Muhyiddin's soldiers attacked Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin's fort in Kinarut. But the attack failed. Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin's forces, helped by Bajaus and Dusuns, fought them off. Several of Muhyiddin's important leaders were killed.

After this defeat, Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin returned to Pulau Cermin. Muhyiddin then asked the Sultan of Sulu for help. In return, he promised the eastern part of Sabah to the Sultanate of Sulu. Muhyiddin was worried the war would last too long. He feared it would cause more problems for the people of Brunei.

Muhyiddin's soldiers then attacked Pulau Cermin. They fired cannons from Tanjung Kindana. When Muhyiddin's men landed on the island, there was no more fighting. The bombardment had destroyed most of the defenses. Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin was captured on the island. This ended the civil war.

What Happened Next

After becoming Sultan, Muhyiddin wanted to give the throne back to Sultan Muhammad Ali's family. He asked Pengiran Muda Bongsu to return to Brunei. Pengiran Muda Bongsu was Sultan Muhyiddin's original choice to take over. He had fled to Sambas during the civil war. Sultan Muhyiddin gave him the title of Raja Bendahara.

However, Pengiran Muda Bongsu passed away before this could happen. So, Sultan Muhyiddin chose Pengiran Anak Muhammad Alam instead. He was the son of Pengiran Muda Bongsu. Sultan Muhyiddin appointed him as Raja Bendahara. After this appointment, Sultan Muhyiddin went to Kampong Kelaka of Kuala Klawang and stayed there.

The name of this Raja Bendahara is not in the official Brunei royal records. After Pengiran Anak Muhammad Alam died, Muhyiddin was asked to become the ruler of Brunei. He finally took the throne himself.

Sultan Muhyiddin's Death

Sultan Muhyiddin passed away in 1690. After him, Pengiran Anak Chucu Nasruddin became the new Sultan. He was known as Sultan Nasruddin.
