Muirhouse is a residential area located in the south-east part of Motherwell, a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It's a neighbourhood that is part of the Motherwell South East & Ravenscraig council area. It shares borders with other nearby places like Flemington, Craigneuk, and Netherton.
A key feature of Muirhouse is its thirteen tall tower blocks. These buildings are over 52 metres high and have at least 18 floors. They were built between 1963 and 1970. Besides these towers, there are also smaller flats and many houses in the area.
Muirhouse has several important facilities for its residents. There are two Roman Catholic schools, including the nearby Our Lady's High School, and a non-religious school. The community also has a centre for local activities, several small shops, and places to eat. The area is surrounded by green countryside, including the beautiful Dalzell Estate, which offers many walking paths. The closest train station is Sheildmuir, found on the north-eastern edge of Muirhouse.

Modernizing Muirhouse: Changes and Upgrades
Over the years, Muirhouse has seen many improvements and changes to make it a better place to live.
New Homes and Green Spaces
Some of the older, smaller flats in the area have been taken down. In their place, new houses have been built, and more green spaces have been created for everyone to enjoy. This helps to make the neighbourhood feel more open and modern.
Upgrades to Tower Blocks
The tall tower blocks in Muirhouse have also received many updates. Between 1997 and 2000, new outer layers, called overcladding, were added to the buildings. This changed how they looked and helped protect them. The first blocks to get this upgrade were Grange and Merryton, and the last were Shields and Muirhouse.
Other improvements to the towers included closing off the outside balconies, making them part of the flats. Security cameras (CCTV) were also installed both inside and outside the buildings to help keep residents safe. The North Lanarkshire Council has also been working to upgrade the inside of the flats by putting in new bathrooms and kitchens.
Future Plans for the Towers
In 2017, the council announced plans for the future of the tower blocks. They intend to gradually take down all the towers they manage over the next 25 years. The reason for this is that older buildings become more expensive to maintain as they age. The plan is to replace these towers with new, modern homes.
