Muiz ud din Qaiqabad was a young ruler from the Mamluk dynasty, also known as the Slave dynasty. He became the Sultan of Delhi in 1287 when he was just 17 years old. He was the grandson of a powerful sultan, Ghiyas ud din Balban. His father, Bughra Khan, was the independent ruler of Bengal.

How Qaiqabad Became Sultan

After his son, Muhammad Khan, died in a battle against the Mongols in 1286, Sultan Ghiyas ud din Balban was very sad. In his final days, Balban wanted his other son, Bughra Khan, to stay with him. However, Bughra Khan, who was the governor of Bengal, returned to his own region.

Balban then chose another grandson, Kay Khusroe, to rule after him. But after Balban died, a powerful official named Fakhr-ud-Din changed the plan. He made Muiz ud din Qaiqabad the new Sultan. Qaiqabad was only 17 years old at the time.

Qaiqabad's Time as Sultan

When Qaiqabad became Sultan, he enjoyed a life of luxury. His court officials also followed his example. He was not as focused on religious studies as some earlier rulers.

His army met his father Bughra Khan's army in Northern Bihar. But instead of fighting, Qaiqabad ran to embrace his father. No battle took place, and they agreed on a lasting peace treaty. This agreement between Bengal and Delhi was respected by future rulers too.

When Qaiqabad returned to Delhi, he moved an important official named Nizam-ud-Din to Multan. When Nizam-ud-Din seemed hesitant, the Sultan had him removed from power. Qaiqabad then appointed Jalal-ud-din Khalji as the new army commander. These changes caused unrest among the Turkic nobles. Jalal-ud-Din Firuz used this chance to march his army towards Delhi.
