Mukund Lath (born October 9, 1937 – died August 6, 2020) was a famous Indian expert. He studied and wrote a lot about India's culture. This included its music, dance, art, and history. The Indian government gave him a high award called the Padma Shri in 2010.

His Life and Studies
Mukund Lath was born on October 9, 1937, in Kolkata, West Bengal. After finishing high school, he studied English literature at the University of Delhi. In 1965, he earned his master's degree in Sanskrit from Jadavpur University.
Studying Ancient Music
Later, Mukund Lath went to West Berlin to study music. He researched an old book called Dattilam. This book is about the music of India. He then came back to India. In 1976, he earned his PhD from Delhi University. His PhD was also about Dattilam.
His Musical Training
Mukund Lath also trained in classical Indian music. From 1966 to 1968, he learned from Pandit Maniram and Ramesh Chakravarti. He also learned a special style called Khayal Mewat Gharana. His teacher was the famous Pandit Jasraj. Mukund Lath even joined Pandit Jasraj on many concert tours.
His Career as a Professor
In 1973, Mukund Lath started working at the University of Rajasthan. He taught in the Department of History and Indian Culture. He worked there until he retired in 1997.
His Important Writings
Mukund Lath wrote many books and articles. His works helped people understand Indian culture better.
- A Study of Dattilam: This was his research on the ancient music book, Dattilam.
- Transformation as Creation: This book explored different parts of Indian culture.
- Hindi Padavali of Namdev: This was a close look at the writings of Namdev, a famous Indian poet and saint.
- The Ardhakathanaka - Half A Tale: This book studied the life story of a Jain merchant from the 1600s.
- Bhakthi, A Contemporary Discussion: This book looked at the meaning of the Indian Bhakti tradition.
Mukund Lath also translated old Sanskrit and Prakrit poems into Hindi. Many people have studied his works and written about them.
Teaching Around the World
Mukund Lath was a visiting professor at many universities. He taught at places like Oxford University in England. He also taught in Belgium, Germany, and Israel. He gave many speeches and lectures at conferences. He was also part of a special project by the Government of India. This project studied the history of Indian science, philosophy, and culture.
Mukund Lath helped create new ways to study cultural history. He wrote about the history of musical instruments. These included the Tanpura and the Sarangi. He explained how important they are in Indian concerts.
Awards and Special Recognitions
Mukund Lath received many awards for his work.
- In 2000, he received the Shankar Puraskar. This was for his book Sangeet evam Chintan (Music and Thoughts).
- In 2003, he received the Naresh Mehta Vangmaya Puraskar for the same book.
- In 2008, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. This award honors artists and scholars in India.
- In 2010, the Government of India gave him the Padma Shri. This is one of the highest awards a civilian can receive in India.
- In 2012, the Sangeet Natak Akademi honored him again. They gave him their highest honor, the Fellowship of Sangeet Natak Akademi Ratna.
