Mullett Township is a local government area in Cheboygan County, Michigan. It is a type of community called a civil township. In 2020, about 1,236 people lived here.

Both the township and the nearby Mullett Lake are named after John Mullett. He was a surveyor who mapped much of this area between 1840 and 1843. When Mullett Township was first created, its name was spelled "Mullet." This spelling was often seen on old maps and documents.

Topinabee is a small, unincorporated community. It is located about 13 miles southwest of Cheboygan. You can find it on the western shore of Mullett Lake.

History of Topinabee

Topinabee was founded in 1881 and 1882. It was named after Chief Topenebee, a leader of the Potawatomi people. Chief Topenebee mostly lived in southwestern Michigan.

Topinabee has a few important places. There is a United States Postal Service office for mail. You can also find two non-denominational Protestant churches. The community has a public library, a bar and grille, and a breakfast cafe. There is also a gas station with a market and a rustic furniture store.

Mullett Township takes care of two public beaches on Mullett Lake. They also manage a public boat launch. For fun, there is a park with a baseball field, tennis and basketball courts, and playground equipment.

Roads and Access

M-27, also known as North Straits Highway, runs along the western shore of Mullett Lake. It passes right through Topinabee. You can also easily reach Interstate 75 just south of the township's border. This highway is in Tuscarora Township.

The township covers a total area of about 35.7 square miles (92.5 square kilometers). A large part of this area is water. About 16.7 square miles (43.2 square kilometers) is water, which is almost 47% of the total area. This water is mostly Mullett Lake itself. The land area is about 19.0 square miles (49.2 square kilometers).
