A Look Back at Munday's History
Munday started as a community in 1893. That's when the first store was built in the area. It was first called Maud. But in 1894, it was renamed Munday after the first postmaster, R.P. Munday.
In 1903, businesses from West Munday moved closer to East Munday. This brought the two parts of the community together. The Wichita Valley Railroad arrived in 1906. This was the same year Munday became an official city. By 1910, Munday had 968 residents. This made it the largest town in Knox County. The population grew to 2,270 by 1950. However, it slowly decreased in the second half of the 1900s.
Today, Munday offers a few fun places to visit. These include a nine-hole golf course, a county library, a city park, and shops that sell old items.
Farming in Munday
Cotton has always been a very important crop in the Munday area. It still plays a big part in the local economy. In 1900, W. A. Earnest built a cotton gin. This machine helps process cotton.
Munday also became a center for processing vegetables. Farmers started using irrigation to grow crops like onions, potatoes, cucumbers, and melons. In 1971, Texas A&M University even opened a special research center in Munday for vegetables.
