Murbko is a small place, also called a locality, in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. It's located right next to the famous Murray River. The river forms the western edge of Murbko.

If you look at a map, Murbko is downstream from where the Murray River makes a big turn towards the south. The southern part of Murbko is also close to the Sturt Highway. This highway crosses the dry, scrubby land (called mallee) from the Blanchetown bridge towards Waikerie. A historic church, the Murbko Lutheran church, was built here in 1907 and is still used today.

How Murbko is Governed

Murbko is divided into different areas for local government. Most of Murbko, about two-thirds of it, is managed by the District Council of Loxton Waikerie. This part is also in the electoral district of Chaffey. An electoral district is an area that chooses a representative for the state government.

The northern part of Murbko, about one-third, is part of the Mid Murray Council. Even though it's split between two local councils, the entire area of Murbko belongs to the federal Division of Barker. This is an area that chooses a representative for the national government.

Murbko's River History

The Murbko area has a rich history connected to the Murray River. In the past, riverboats were the best way to travel and move goods. Because of this, Murbko includes several old "landings" and "homesteads" along the river.

  • Landings were places where boats could stop to load or unload things.
  • Homesteads were the main houses on large farms.

One important historical spot is Woods Flat. This area used to have its own school and an institute. An institute was a community building often used for meetings, libraries, and social events. These places show how important the river was for people living in Murbko long ago.
