Murtuz Alasgarov was an important politician from Azerbaijan. He was born on September 20, 1928, and passed away on August 7, 2012. Mr. Alasgarov served as the Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan. This means he was the leader of Azerbaijan's main law-making body. He held this important role from 1996 to 2005.
Early Life and Education
Murtuz Alasgarov was born in Ganja, Azerbaijan, in 1928. He studied law at the Azerbaijan State University. After graduating, he became a professor there in 1954. He later became the Dean of the Law Department.
In 1957, he became the Dean of the International Law Department. From 1965, he led the Department of Constitutional Law. Later, from 1993 to 1996, he was the Rector of Baku State University. This is like being the president of a university. He also received an honorary doctorate from Kiev State University.
Political Career
Murtuz Alasgarov began his political career in the mid-1990s. He was elected to the National Assembly of Azerbaijan in 1995. This is Azerbaijan's parliament, where laws are made. He was re-elected in the year 2000.
On October 16, 1996, his fellow parliament members chose him. He became the Speaker of the National Assembly. He was re-elected to this role in November 2000. He served as Speaker until December 2005. Ogtay Asadov then took over the position.
In the 2005 elections, Alasgarov was re-elected to parliament. He represented the Garadag district in Baku. He was also a Deputy Chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party. This is one of the main political parties in Azerbaijan.
Achievements and Personal Life
Murtuz Alasgarov was recognized for his work. He received the İstiqlal (Sovereignty) order from Azerbaijan. He also got an Honorary Diploma of Azerbaijani President. From other countries, he received the Содружество order from the CIS. He also received the Order of Friendship from Russia.
He wrote many scientific papers and textbooks. He was a member of several legal organizations. These included Azerbaijani Lawyers and International Law Associations. He could speak English and Russian fluently.
Murtuz Alasgarov was married and had three children. He passed away in Baku in 2012 after a long illness.
