Musa Ibrahim (Bengali: মুসা ইব্রাহীম) is a famous Bangladeshi mountaineer, explorer, journalist, and writer. He made history by becoming the first person from Bangladesh to reach the very top of Mount Everest. He achieved this amazing feat on May 23, 2010, at about 5:05 AM Bangladesh time. He proudly raised the flag of Bangladesh on the world's highest peak around 5:16 AM. After his climb, Bangladesh became the 67th country to have a climber conquer Mount Everest.

Musa is also involved in promoting mountaineering in Bangladesh. He is the general secretary of the North Alpine Club Bangladesh. This is a club for people who love climbing mountains. He also works as a special correspondent for Channel 24, a news channel. Before that, he was a sub-editor at The Daily Star newspaper. To encourage young people to get into mountaineering, he started the Everest Academy in 2011. He also founded the Everest Foundation in 2012. This foundation works on projects for people and the environment.

His Early Life

Musa Ibrahim was born in Bogra, Bangladesh, at his mother's parents' house. His father's parents lived in Gandhamarua village in Aditmari Upazila, Lalmonirhat. He went to Thakurgaon Sugar Mills High School. Later, he completed his Higher Secondary Certificate from Notre Dame College.

Musa studied at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at the University of Dhaka. He earned a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree in science education. He also got a Master of Education (MEd) degree in educational evaluation and research. After that, he studied disaster management at BRAC University.

His Amazing Achievements

Musa Ibrahim is celebrated for being the first Bangladeshi to climb Mount Everest. He reached the summit on May 23, 2010. There, he proudly hoisted the national flag of Bangladesh. He used the North Alpine route, which is on the Tibetan side of the mountain. His team included six Britons, three Montenegrins, an American, and a Serbian. The China Tibet Mountaineering Association confirmed his successful climb.

Musa has also planned other exciting expeditions. He organized a special Bangladesh-Russia friendship mountaineering trip to Mount Elbrus. Mount Elbrus is a very tall mountain in Russia. They raised the flags of Bangladesh, Russia, and the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic on Mount Elbrus. A local guide named Dalhat Olmejhev helped them. Many organizations supported this trip, including the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism in Bangladesh.

Musa also planned an expedition with Satyarup Siddhanta from India. This trip was called 'First Bangladesh-India Friendship Expedition to Mount Denali'. It was planned for June 2014. This expedition aimed to strengthen the friendship between the two countries.

Mountaineering Journeys

Musa Ibrahim has climbed many famous mountains around the world. Here are some of his notable climbs:

  • June 13, 2017: He reached the summit of Mount Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 meters / 16,023 feet). His team members were Satyarup Siddhanta and Nandita Chandrashekhar.
  • June 23, 2014: He summited Denali (6,190 meters / 20,310 feet). This mountain is also known as Mount McKinley. Christopher Manning from Canada led the team. Other members included Satyarup Siddhanta (India), Susmita Maskey (Nepal), and Ryan Francois (USA).
  • June 26, 2013: He climbed Mount Elbrus (5,642 meters / 18,506 feet). He was with Niaz Patwary and Sifat Fahmida Nawshin. Dalhat Olmejhev, a local guide, helped them.
  • September 13, 2011: He reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,885 meters / 19,308 feet). His team member was Niaz Morshed Patwary.
  • May 23, 2010: He made history by reaching the summit of Mount Everest (8,848 meters / 29,029 feet). He used the North Route from Tibet, China.
  • June 14, 2009: He summited Annapurna IV (7,525 meters / 24,682 feet).
  • December 1, 2008: He reached the top of Langsisa Ri (6,310 meters / 20,700 feet).
  • May 2007: He climbed up to 18,500 feet on Chulu West (6,419 meters / 21,054 feet).
  • May 2006: He summited Frey Peak (5,831 meters / 19,125 feet).
  • September 2005: He successfully completed Advanced Mountaineering Training. This was at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling, India. The training reached an altitude of 5,335 meters (17,500 feet).
  • May 2005: He climbed up to 18,500 feet on Mera Peak (6,654 meters / 21,825 feet).
  • May 10–23, 2004: He successfully trekked to Everest Base Camp (EBC). This camp is at 5,335 meters (17,500 feet).
  • April 2004: He finished Basic Mountaineering Training. This was also at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. The training reached 4,878 meters (16,000 feet).
  • April 8–16, 2002: He trekked the Annapurna Trail and ascended to Muktinath. This reached 3,800 meters (12,464 feet).
  • September 2000: He successfully trekked to the top of Keocradong Hill (967 meters / 3,172 feet).
