A Look Back: Myrtle's History
Myrtle started as a place called "Candy Hill" around 1857. This first settlement was about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of where the town is today.
After the American Civil War, Candy Hill wanted to get a post office. To do this, they changed the town's name to "Myrtle." They chose this name because there were many myrtle trees growing in the area.
In the 1880s, a railroad called the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad was built. Because of the new railroad, the town moved north to its current spot.
