NOMA is a huge building project in Manchester, England. The name NOMA is a mix of "North" and "Manchester." This project is making a 20-acre (8 hectare) area of the city centre much better. It is the biggest development happening in North West England.
NOMA aims to make the northern part of Manchester city centre lively again. This area has not been updated as much as other parts of the city. The Co-operative Group, a company that started in Manchester in 1843, is behind this project. They hope NOMA will encourage more businesses to invest in Manchester. The plan includes building 4 million square feet (370,000 square metres) of offices, homes, shops, fun places, and hotels.
A key part of NOMA is the £100 million One Angel Square building. It opened in 2013 and is 72 metres (236 feet) tall. People sometimes say it looks like a "sliced egg" because of its unique shape. In 2014, The Co-operative and Hermes Real Estate teamed up. This partnership helps them build the next parts of the NOMA project.
Some older buildings are also being updated. The Hanover Building is becoming an office space. City Buildings is being turned into a hotel. Future plans include a 106-metre (348-foot) tall apartment building called Angel Gardens. Another office building, 3 Angel Square, is also planned.
About the NOMA Project
Why is it Called NOMA?
In March 2011, the project was officially named NOMA. This name comes from two things. "NO" stands for "North," showing its global location at 53° North. "MA" stands for "Manchester," its local city. The idea for this name came from a similar project in San Francisco called SOMA (South of Market). That area was also redeveloped over many years.
Where is NOMA Located?
NOMA is right in the centre of Manchester. It covers a large area of 20 acres (8 hectares).
Buildings in the NOMA Estate
One Angel Square: A Green Building
One Angel Square was the very first building finished in the NOMA project. It is the main office for Co-operative Group employees. Building work started in July 2010. About 4,000 workers from 90 different companies helped build it.
One Angel Square is known for being very eco-friendly. It got an "outstanding" rating from BREEAM, which is a way to measure how sustainable a building is. It scored 92.25, which is very high. When Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the building in November 2013, it was called "the most sustainable building in the world."
Hanover Building: A Historic Office Space
Hanover Building is on Corporation Street. It was built a long time ago, between 1905 and 1909. It is a Grade II listed building, which means it is a special historic building. After a lot of work, Hanover opened again in 2018. Now, it is the main office for Amazon in Manchester.
Sadler's Yard: A New Public Square
Construction started on a new public square in January 2014. It opened in December 2015. An old building from the 1960s, called Redfern Annexe, was knocked down to make space for it. The new square was named Sadler's Yard after a famous pioneer named James Sadler. This square is now used for many public events. These include the Sadler's Yard Summer Jam and a dog show called Sit and Stay at Sadler's Yard.
City Buildings and Hotel Indigo: A Circular Hotel
The Hotel Indigo cost £26 million to build. It is located near the Victoria tram stop and Todd Street. This hotel is 14 storeys high and has a cool circular shape. The new hotel also includes the nearby City Buildings, which is another Grade II listed building.
New Century House: A Place for Music History
New Century House is another Grade II listed building. It is on the corner of Corporation Street and Miller Street. Co-operative Group employees moved out of this building in 2013. New Century House is being updated in 2021.
Attached to New Century House is New Century Hall. This is a historic conference hall that was also a music venue. Famous musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner played there in the 1960s and 1970s.
Federation House: For Innovators
Federation House is a building that used to belong to the Co-operative. It is not a listed building. It was used for a short time by an art gallery. Now, it is home to "a community of innovators in Manchester." This means it's a place where creative people and new businesses work together.
Three Angel Square: Offices for Growing Companies
This building was announced in March 2014. It will have nine floors and nearly 200,000 square feet (18,580 square metres) of office space. This space is designed to be flexible for small to medium-sized companies. It was expected to open by 2018.
