Nahum Barnea (Hebrew: נחום ברנע) is a well-known Israeli journalist. He was born on October 23, 1944. Barnea writes for a big newspaper called Yedioth Ahronoth. In 2007, he won the important Israel Prize for his work.

Nahum Barnea was born in a city called Petah Tikva. His original last name was Borstein. When he was younger, he served in the IDF, which is Israel's army.

He went to Hebrew University in Jerusalem. There, he studied history and political science. He earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).

Barnea is married to Tami. They have three children together. Sadly, his son Yonatan passed away in 1996.

His Career in Journalism

Nahum Barnea started his journalism journey while he was still at university. He wrote for the student newspaper called Pi-Ha'aton [he].

From 1967 to 1982, he worked for a newspaper named Davar. He even became their reporter in Washington, D.C., in the United States. Later, he helped start and edit a weekly newspaper called Koteret Rashit.

Since 1989, Barnea has been a main writer for Yedioth Ahronoth. This is one of Israel's most widely read newspapers. He also wrote for another publication, Ha'Ayin HaShevi'it, from 1996 to 2008.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Nahum Barnea has received many awards for his excellent journalism.

  • In 1981, he won the Sokolov Prize for journalism.
  • In 1998, a survey showed that people thought he was one of the most important journalists in Israel.
  • He received the "Archivio Disarmo - Golden Doves for Peace" prize in 1996.
  • In 2007, he was given the Israel Prize for communications. This is one of the highest honors in Israel. The judges said that many young writers look up to him. They also mentioned that Barnea always tries to be close to important events, even in dangerous places like wars or during difficult times.
  • In 2007, Tel Aviv University also gave him an award. They recognized his achievements and his special contributions to journalism in Israel.

Books He Has Written

Nahum Barnea has published several books. These books are collections of his articles and his thoughts on different topics.

  • Yorim u-bokhim (which means "They shoot and cry") was published in 1981. It is a collection of articles he wrote for Davar.
  • Yemay netanyahu (meaning "Days of Netanyahu") came out in 1999. This book includes articles he wrote for Yedioth Ahronoth and Ha'Ayin HaShevi'it.
  • In 2006, he published a book called Backchannel: Bush, Sharon and the Uses of Unilateralism.
