Namao (pronounced nuh-MAY-oh) is a small community called a hamlet in central Alberta, Canada. It is part of Sturgeon County. You can find Namao where Highway 37 and Highway 28 cross. It is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) north of Edmonton's city limits. Namao also gave its name to a nearby air force base, which is now known as CFB Edmonton.
A Look Back at Namao's History
The people living near the Sturgeon River wanted a post office for a long time. They first asked for one in 1884. They thought about calling it Wilson Valley or Sturgeon. Finally, they decided on Naoma, which later became Namao.
The Namao post office officially opened on April 12, 1892. The name "Namao" comes from the Cree word namêw. This word means "sturgeon", which is a type of large fish. In 1892, the postmaster confirmed that "Nemao" was the correct spelling for the post office.
