He was one of ten scouts who later received the Medal of Honor for being very brave.

Nannasaddie's Story

Nannasaddie was born in the Arizona Territory. He became one of ten Apaches hired by the U.S. Army to be an Indian scout. This was for Lieutenant Colonel George Crook's mission. Their goal was to find groups of Apaches who had not surrendered.

Scouting in Arizona

Nannasaddie helped guide cavalry soldiers in the Tonto Basin. This area was known for Western Apache and Yavapai groups. These groups had avoided the U.S. Army for many years. Nannasaddie fought with the soldiers in the mountains. This was during Crook's winter campaign of 1872–73.

Earning the Medal of Honor

A total of 23 men received the Medal of Honor for their actions during these conflicts. All of the Indian scouts, including Nannasaddie, received this special award. They were given the Medal of Honor on April 12, 1875. It was for their "gallant conduct," meaning brave actions, during battles with the Apaches. Other scouts who received the award included William Alchesay, Blanquet, Chiquito, Elsatsoosu, Jim, Kelsay, Kosoha, Machol, and Nantaje.
