The Story of Naponee
The first people to settle in the Naponee area arrived in 1869. The village's name comes from Napanee, Ontario. This was the hometown of a Canadian soldier who fought in the American Civil War. He later bought land along the Republican River.
A post office was opened in Naponee in 1871. The first store opened in 1877. The village was officially surveyed in 1879. That same year, the Burlington Railroad brought train service to the town. Naponee officially became a village on November 30, 1909.
Like many places, Naponee faced tough times during the Great Depression. Major dust storms and a big flood of the Republican River in 1935 made things even harder. However, the building of the nearby Harlan County Dam in the 1940s helped the village. It almost doubled the population from 200 to 400 people. Today, Naponee is still a rural community. Its population has remained stable.
