The National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (NCCIL, pronounced nickle) is a special museum in Abilene, Texas. It's all about the amazing pictures you see in children's books! It opened in 2000.

About the NCCIL

The NCCIL's main goal is to create cool art shows. These shows feature original artwork from famous children's book illustrators. After they are shown at the NCCIL gallery, these exhibitions travel. They visit museums, libraries, and other galleries all across the country.

The NCCIL also offers fun summer art camps. They have a great school tour program too. During these tours, friendly guides called docents teach students about the art.

The idea for the NCCIL started with Gary D. McCaleb. He was a former Mayor of Abilene. In 1993, he read a book called Santa Calls by William Joyce. He was excited to learn that the story was set in Abilene!

Dr. McCaleb invited William Joyce to speak in Abilene. They quickly became friends. From their talks, the idea grew for a place that would celebrate the artwork of children's illustrators.

In 1997, the NCCIL officially became a non-profit group. A statue called "Childhood's Great Adventure" was put up downtown. It shows children from the Santa Calls book. The Junior League of Abilene helped a lot to make the museum happen. On September 14, 2000, the NCCIL opened its doors. It is located in the old Rhodes Building, which was built in the 1920s.
