The National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (NCCIL, pronounced nickle) is a special museum in Abilene, Texas. It opened in 2000. This museum is all about showing amazing pictures and drawings from children's books.

What is the NCCIL?

The NCCIL was created to put together art shows. After an art show starts at the NCCIL in Abilene, it travels to other museums, libraries, and art galleries all over the country. The NCCIL also has fun summer art camps. They offer special tours for school groups, led by helpful guides.

How the NCCIL Started

The idea for the NCCIL came from Gary D. McCaleb, who used to be the mayor of Abilene. In 1993, he read a book called Santa Calls by William Joyce to some students. He learned that the story was set in Abilene. This inspired him to invite William Joyce to speak in Abilene.

When Dr. McCaleb and William Joyce met, they became good friends. They thought it would be wonderful to have a place that celebrated the artwork of children's book illustrators. In 1997, the NCCIL officially became a non-profit group. A statue called "Childhood's Great Adventure" was put up downtown. It shows children from the Santa Calls book.

A group called the Junior League of Abilene became a main supporter. On September 14, 2000, the NCCIL opened its doors to the public. It is located in the old Rhodes Building, which was built in the 1920s.
