The Mirza Fatali Akhundov National Library of Azerbaijan is the main library of Azerbaijan. It is located in the city of Baku. This important library was started in 1922. It is named after Mirza Fatali Akhundov, who was a famous Azerbaijani writer and thinker.

History of the Library
The library was created by the government of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic in 1922. On May 23, 1923, the library moved to its current building. A well-known Azerbaijani architect named Mikayil Huseynov designed this building.
Building Design
The outside of the library building has statues of many famous writers and poets. These include Nizami Ganjavi, Mahsati, Uzeyir Hajibeyov, Shota Rustaveli, and Alexander Pushkin.
Naming the Library
When it first opened, the library was called the "General Library and State Book Storage of Azerbaijan". Later, on July 11, 1939, it received its current name.
What the Library Holds
The National Library of Azerbaijan has a huge collection of materials. It has about 4,513,000 items. These items are kept in 25 different sections and 26 special areas.
Types of Materials
The library's collection includes many different things. You can find:

- Journals
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Sound and music recordings
- Patents (documents for new inventions)
- Databases (organized information)
- Maps
- Stamps
- Prints
- Drawings
- Manuscripts (handwritten documents)
The library also keeps copies of all newspapers that were printed in Azerbaijan during the Soviet period.
Special Collections
This library is the only one in Azerbaijan that has microfilms and photos of old newspapers. These newspapers were published in Azerbaijan before the Bolshevik Revolution.
Official Repository
The National Library of Azerbaijan is also the official place where the country's publications are stored. This means it gets copies of almost everything new that is published in Azerbaijan. It receives:
- Four copies of every new book
- Two copies of every new magazine
- Two copies of every new newspaper
