Boston, Massachusetts, is a city with a very long and interesting history. Because of this, it has many special places and areas listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Think of this register as a national list of important historical sites.

In Suffolk County, where Boston is located, there are 343 places on this list. A big part of these, 322 properties and districts, are right in Boston! Some of these are even more special, called National Historic Landmarks. Boston has 58 of these very important landmarks. Other towns in Suffolk County have their own lists of historic places.

Discovering Boston's Historic Places

Boston has so many historic places that they are divided into two main groups. These groups are "Northern Boston" and "Southern Boston." The Massachusetts Turnpike, a major highway, helps divide the city into these two sections.

Some historic areas are so large they stretch across both parts of Boston. For example, the 1767 Milestones are old markers that show distances. The Olmsted Park System is also a big network of parks that covers both northern and southern areas.
