Oregon Pacific Railroad Linear Historic District

The Oregon Pacific Railroad Linear Historic District is a long, historic section of an old railroad grade. It stretches for about 20 miles between Idanha and the Cascade Range summit, passing through Santiam Junction. This district was listed on October 29, 1999.

The story of this railroad is quite interesting! Back in 1872, a man named Thomas Egenton Hogg wanted to build a railroad that would go all the way across the country and end at the Oregon Coast. However, his company went bankrupt in 1894. By then, the tracks only reached from Yaquina Bay to Idanha in the Cascade foothills. They had started building the path for the tracks (called a "grade") east of Idanha towards the mountain summit, but it was never finished.

This historic district protects the remaining parts of that unfinished grade work east of Idanha, as well as the sites of two construction camps. Because the project was abandoned partway through, these remnants give us a unique look into how railroads were built and what life was like in the construction camps during the 19th century.
