National Yang-Ming University (NYMU) was a public university located in Taipei, Taiwan. It was known for its excellent programs in medicine and life sciences.
The university was named after a famous Chinese philosopher, Wang Yangming. In 2021, National Yang-Ming University joined with National Chiao Tung University. Together, they formed a new university called National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.
NYMU was especially good at research in Medicine, Life Sciences, and Biotechnology. In 2010, it was ranked as the 4th best university in Taiwan by the QS Asian Universities Rankings. It was also ranked 2nd in Asia for Life Science & Biomedicine. NYMU was one of Taiwan's top national research universities.

A Look Back: University History
The university started in 1975 as the National Yang-Ming College of Medicine. Its main goal was to train top medical experts and scientists.
In 1994, it officially became a university, changing its name to National Yang-Ming University. It was the first university in Taiwan focused on biomedical education and research. Besides its first goal, the university also worked hard to be excellent in biomedical research. It also encouraged working with other universities both in Taiwan and around the world.
Growth and Development
Over 30 years, NYMU grew a lot. By 2005, it had five main schools:
- Medicine
- Dentistry
- Medical Technology and Biomedical Engineering
- Life Sciences
- Nursing
It also had a Center for General Education. The Taipei Veterans General Hospital worked as a teaching hospital for students studying medicine and other health fields.
NYMU also created 15 research centers. These centers focused on many important areas, such as:
- Genomic Medicine (studying genes)
- Brain Research
- Cognitive Neuroscience (how the brain thinks)
- Immunology (how the body fights sickness)
- Cellular and Molecular Biology (studying tiny parts of living things)
- Biomedical Engineering (designing medical tools)
- Medical Imaging (like X-rays and MRIs)
- Biophotonics (using light in medicine)
- Bioinformatics (using computers for biology)
- Health Informatics (using computers for health information)
- AIDS research
- Community Medicine
- Community Nursing
In 2010, President Kung-Yee Liang received a special award called the Rema Lapouse Award.
Joining Forces: The Merger
In December 2018, discussions began about National Yang-Ming University joining with National Chiao Tung University. Both universities voted to merge in September 2019. The Ministry of Education approved this plan in June 2020. The merger officially happened on February 1, 2021.

The university had 7 departments and 28 graduate institutes. These were part of 6 main schools:

- Humanities and Social Sciences
- Life Sciences

- Nursing
In 2007, NYMU had 1,836 undergraduate students and 2,297 graduate students.
Global Connections
NYMU took part in special international programs. These included the Molecular Medicine Program and the Bioinformatics Program. Both were part of the Taiwan International Graduate Program by Academia Sinica, which is Taiwan's most important research organization.

Health Care Partnerships
NYMU worked with the Taipei City Hospital System and National Chengchi University. Together, they created a health care system. This system covered:

Famous Alumni
- Shiu Ming-neng: He served as the Vice Minister of Health and Welfare from 2013 to 2016.
