Navalcarnero was founded by the city of Segovia at the end of 1499. This was done to help stop arguments over land in the area. Before this, different groups were trying to take over the land.
On October 10, 1499, the very first Mayor of Navalcarnero was chosen. He was one of the six people from Perales who helped start the village.
Early Challenges and Independence
Soon after it was founded, in 1521, a local official named Alonso de Arreo helped Segovia during a conflict called the Castilian War of the Communities.
Navalcarnero was under Segovia's control for 128 years, until 1627. During this time, the town was attacked many times and even burned down four times by nearby powerful groups. The town also had a long legal fight for 93 years over some meadows. It also protected its land from other powerful families for 118 years.
In 1627, Navalcarnero bought its independence from the King. This meant it became its own city. However, it kept Segovia's coat of arms as part of its own, to remember its past.
A special event happened in Navalcarnero in 1649. King Philip IV got married to Mariana de Austria right here in the town!
In October 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, Navalcarnero was taken over by the Nationalist forces. They were trying to advance towards Madrid.
Later, in 1937, some soldiers from the Republican side were held in Navalcarnero's jail. These included sixteen British soldiers from the International Brigade. They were questioned and then moved to another prison.
The main way to get to Navalcarnero is by using the A-5 freeway. This is a major road that connects different places.
There are also bus services that link Navalcarnero to other towns. The company Blas y Cía runs buses to Móstoles and Alcorcón Hospital. You can also take a bus to Madrid (to a place called Príncipe Pío).
Another bus company, Cevesa, connects Madrid (Méndez Álvaro) with a housing area called Fado/Calypo. This bus also makes stops in Alcorcón, Móstoles, and Navalcarnero.
