Nava Raipur, also called Atal Nagar-Nava Raipur, is a special planned city in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It's a brand new city built from scratch, known as a Greenfield city. It was designed to become the new capital of Chhattisgarh, taking over from the old capital, Raipur.
The government offices of Chhattisgarh are located here. The city is about 17 kilometers (10 miles) south-east of Raipur. It sits between two important roads, National Highway 53 and National Highway 30. The Swami Vivekananda Airport is located between Raipur and Nava Raipur.

After the state of Chhattisgarh was formed in November 2000, the government decided to build a modern, well-planned city. This new city would serve as the state's capital.
To make this happen, a special group was created. It was first called the Capital Area Development Authority (CADA). Now, it is known as the Nava Raipur Atal Nagar Vikas Pradhikaran (NRDA). The NRDA is in charge of developing this entire new city. They make sure everything is built according to the plan.
Nava Raipur is designed to be more than just a government center. It aims to have a diverse economy. This means it will have many different types of businesses and activities.
Here are some of the things planned for Nava Raipur:
- A park for software technology companies.
- Industries for gems, jewelry, and similar products.
- Offices for various businesses.
- Services for health, education, and research.
- Places for fun and recreation.
- The Nandan Van Zoo & Safari.
- An international cricket stadium.
- Fancy 5-star hotels.
- A large golf course with 18 holes and golf villas.
- Museums and art galleries.
- Libraries and beautiful gardens.
- A botanical garden with many types of plants.
- Lakes and even a film city for movies!
When planning Nava Raipur, experts studied other cities. They looked at Chandigarh, which was India's first planned state capital. They also studied Raipur, the older, natural city nearby.
Planners figured out how much space each activity or work area would need. For example, they calculated the exact number of government jobs. Then, they decided where these areas would go on the city map. They made sure to define the exact borders and roads.
This careful planning helped them estimate how many jobs the city would create. With a population of about 560,000 people, Nava Raipur is expected to create around 220,000 jobs. The city is designed with high-quality facilities for daily life and services. This ensures it can handle its maximum population.
Nava Raipur is becoming a major center for education in Chhattisgarh. Some important educational institutions from Raipur are moving here.
These include:
- Hidayatullah National Law University
- National Institute of Technology, Raipur
- International Institute of Information Technology
- Indian Institute of Management, Raipur
The state government also plans to build a science city in Nava Raipur. This will be a place for learning about science and technology.
Roads for Travel
Nava Raipur has a very well-planned road system within the city. It is also well-connected to Raipur and other parts of the state. This is thanks to national and state highways.
Some major roads include the Raipur–Naya Raipur Expressway, also called the Atal Path Expressway. This road directly links the city to the Raipur railway station. National Highway 30 (NH-30) and National Highway 53 (NH-53) also pass near the city.
A new road, the Durg–Raipur–Arang Expressway, will pass through the southern part of the city. The Raipur–Visakhapatnam Expressway is also being built. These new expressways will make it even easier to travel to and from Nava Raipur.
Train Connections
There are two small railway stations close to Nava Raipur. The main and closest one is the Nava Raipur Railway Station. It is also called Atal Nagar Railway Station. This station is about 11 kilometers (7 miles) north of the city. It is on the Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai line.
Larger railway stations are Raipur Junction railway station, about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) away, and Arang Mahanadi railway station, about 24 kilometers (15 miles) from Nava Raipur.
A new major railway station, the CBD Railway Station, is being built. It is located near the airport. Once finished, it will become the main train station for Nava Raipur.
Bus Services
Regular bus services run from the Nava Raipur Bus Station. These services are provided by the Nava Raipur Atal Nagar Vikas Pradhikaran, government, and private companies.
The Raipur and Naya Raipur Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) also connects Nava Raipur with Raipur. The BRTS currently has 9 stops in the city. This is part of the first phase of the smart city project. More stops will be added in the future.
Future Metro Plans
The Government of Chhattisgarh has proposed a new light rail system. It is called Metrolite or Lite Metro in India. This system would connect Nava Raipur to Durg, passing through Raipur and Bhilai.
Air Travel
The closest airport is Swami Vivekananda International Airport. It is the only major airport in Chhattisgarh. It is located on the western edge of Nava Raipur, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the city center.
The airport has daily direct flights to many major Indian cities. These include Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Chennai. Airlines like Alliance Air, IndiGo, and Vistara operate these flights.
The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium is a modern cricket stadium in Nava Raipur. It opened in 2008 and can hold 65,000 people. It is the second largest cricket stadium in India. It is also the fourth largest cricket stadium in the world by seating capacity.
The stadium has hosted matches for the Indian Premier League (IPL) team, Delhi Daredevils. It also hosted a half marathon event in 2012 to celebrate Vijay Diwas.
