Nazımiye's Past
Nazımiye's old name was Kızıl Kilise. This name means "Red Church" in Ottoman Turkish. The area became part of the Ottoman Empire after a big battle called the Battle of Chaldiran in 1514.
At first, Kızıl Kilise was a village. Records from 1521–1523 show that about 23 families from the Dersimlü tribe lived there. The village was connected to different regions over time.
In 1876, Kızıl Kilise became a district. By 1894, there were 24 families living in the settlement. Six of these families were Armenians, and the rest were Muslims.
The town's name changed to Nazımiye in 1911. This was done to honor Mehmet Nazım Efendi, who was the grandson of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V. During World War I, Nazımiye was part of Elazığ Province. Later, in 1947, it became part of Tunceli Province.
