Nescopeck is a small town, called a borough, located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. In 2020, about 1,480 people lived there.

History of Nescopeck

Nescopeck was first settled by people in 1786. It officially became a borough in 1896. By the year 1900, more than a thousand people called Nescopeck home. The town's population grew, reaching its highest point of 1,934 people in 1960.

The name "Nescopeck" comes from Nescopeck Creek. This name is from a Native American language and is thought to mean "black, deep, and still water."

In 2011, from September 6th to September 9th, Nescopeck experienced flooding due to Tropical Storm Lee. Areas of the town near the Susquehanna River were affected. The Cooper House, a historic building from 1817, was damaged. It was later taken down on April 26, 2019.

Geography and Location

Nescopeck is located at coordinates 41°3′9″N 76°12′57″W / 41.05250°N 76.21583°W / 41.05250; -76.21583.

The United States Census Bureau states that the borough covers a total area of about 2.7 square kilometers (1.17 square miles), and all of it is land. Nescopeck is situated along the Susquehanna River, very close to the town of Berwick. It is known as a small farming community.

PA 93 runs through Nescopeck from east to west. This highway crosses the Susquehanna River, connecting Nescopeck with nearby Berwick. Another road, PA 339, enters Nescopeck from the west and meets PA 93 in the center of the town.

Climate in Nescopeck

Nescopeck has a "Warm Summer Continental Climate," which means it experiences four different seasons. Winters are cold, and temperatures can sometimes drop below 0°F (about -18°C). There are also days when the highest temperature stays below 32°F (0°C). Heavy snowstorms are rare, but when they happen, they can cause disruptions for a few days.
