Netherwood is a train station in Plainfield, Union County, New Jersey. It is part of the New Jersey Transit system. Trains on the Raritan Valley Line stop here. You can find the station along North Avenue and Netherwood Avenue. It is also located along South Avenue and Belvedere Avenue. The station has a machine where you can buy tickets. The main station building is on the South Avenue side.

A Look Back in Time

The Netherwood station was first built in 1894. It was built by a company called the Central Railroad of New Jersey. This company was often called the CNJ. Over time, the station's ownership changed.

In 1964, the New Jersey Department of Transportation started helping to pay for the station. Later, in 1976, the station became part of a larger railroad company called Conrail. Today, it is run by NJ Transit.

Netherwood is one of two old CNJ stations still standing in Plainfield. The other one is the Downtown Plainfield station. Plainfield used to have four CNJ stations in total.

A Historic Building

The station building itself is quite old and special. It has been recognized as a historic place since 1984. It is listed on both the New Jersey state register and the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important part of history.

The station is part of a group of historic train stations. This group is called the "Operating Passenger Railroad Stations Thematic Resource."

How the Station Works

Netherwood station has two platforms. These are called "low-level side platforms." A platform is the raised area next to the tracks where people wait for trains. "Low-level" means the platform is close to the ground.

  • Track 1: Trains heading towards Raritan or High Bridge use this track. These trains are going west.
  • Track 2: Trains heading towards Newark Penn use this track. These trains are going east.

There is also an underpass at the station. This underpass helps people cross safely between the two platforms. It goes underneath the train tracks.
