New Auckland is a suburb located in Gladstone, a city in Queensland, Australia. It's part of the Gladstone Region. In 2021, about 5,266 people lived there. New Auckland is on the edge of the Gladstone city area. It has been growing a lot with many new homes being built.
Where is New Auckland?
New Auckland is surrounded by natural features and roads. To the north, you'll find the Dawson Highway. Kirkwood Road forms its southern border. On the east side is Auckland Creek, and Briffney Creek is on the west. Most of the land here is used for homes and neighborhoods. The Moura railway line also runs through the north-east part of the suburb.
How New Auckland Got Its Name
This suburb was officially named in December 1988. It got its name from a housing area that was already there. That housing area was named after Auckland Creek. The creek itself was named after a ship called the Lord Auckland.
The Lord Auckland was a large sailing ship. It weighed 516 tons. The New South Wales Government hired this ship. It brought some of the first settlers to the Gladstone area. On January 25, 1847, the ship got stuck on a sandbank while entering Gladstone Harbour.
