History
New Ellenton has a very interesting past! It was created by people who used to live in a town called Ellenton. Ellenton was a farming town started in 1880. It was located on a railway line in Barnwell County.
In 1950, something big happened. The U.S. government, with approval from President Truman, decided to build the Savannah River Site nearby. This site was for making parts for hydrogen bombs. Because of this, about 6,000 people living in the area were asked to move.
The people of Ellenton did something amazing. They literally moved their homes and other buildings about 14 miles north! This new place became New Ellenton. They had to leave their old town in the 1950s, but they brought their community with them.
