Surviving the 2008 Tornado and Flood

New Hartford faced a very powerful tornado on May 25, 2008. This tornado was rated as an EF5, which is the strongest type of tornado. It caused a lot of damage and sadly, two people in New Hartford lost their lives. Seven other people died in the nearby town of Parkersburg. This was only the second EF5 tornado recorded since the new Enhanced Fujita scale was created.

Just one week after the tornado, New Hartford experienced severe flooding in June 2008. The floodwaters were so high that everyone living in the town had to leave their homes. Many houses and buildings were damaged. Organizations like FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and the American Red Cross helped the town recover. The Red Cross gave out food and meals. Some residents even lived in temporary homes provided by FEMA. Many people worked hard to fix their homes, while others decided to move outside of the town. To help prevent future floods, a protective wall called a levee around the town was made taller and stronger in 2009.

New Hartford is the hometown of Chuck Grassley. He is a very important person in the United States government. He is a U.S. Senator for Iowa and has also served as the President pro tempore of the Senate. This means he was a high-ranking leader in the U.S. Senate.
