A Look Back: New Hope's Story
New Hope was first known as Antioch. The town officially became a city in 1974. This happened because most residents didn't want to be taken over by the nearby town of South Pittsburg. The name "New Hope" came from a local church and cemetery in the area.

Cool Places to Visit in New Hope
- Nickajack Dam: This dam is on the eastern edge of New Hope, near Highway 156, on the Tennessee River. It uses water to create electricity. It has four units that can produce a lot of power, especially in the summer.
- Maple View Public Use Area: This area is next to the Nickajack Cave Wildlife Refuge. It's home to special bats that are in danger of disappearing. In June 2019, experts counted over 97,000 bats leaving the cave to find food and then returning. You can even take a kayak tour from Maple View to the cave at dusk to see them!
- Shrine of Our Lady Virgin of the Poor: This special place was built by Benedictine monks in 1982. It's a peaceful spot for anyone, no matter their faith, to think and pray. The Shrine is on a large 600-acre farm in New Hope and is open from sunrise to sunset every day. It looks like a similar shrine in Belgium and has a chapel, statues, and picnic areas.
- Churches and Cemeteries: New Hope also has two Protestant churches: Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and Pine Grove Baptist Church. There are three cemeteries: New Hope Cemetery, Kozelichki Memorial Wall, and the historic McDaniel-Moore Cemetery.
How New Hope Makes a Living
New Hope has several large factories and distribution centers. These include Colonial Chemical, Inc. and Lodge Manufacturing Co. Colonial Chemical, Inc. helps keep the area clean by organizing litter pick-ups along Highway 156.
A grant of $500,000 is helping to build a new rail line. This rail line will connect to the Nickajack Port Industrial Park in New Hope. It will help Colonial Chemical Inc. expand its business by making it easier to move products by train. Construction for this project started in April 2022.
In March 2023, there was talk about a company wanting to build a large RV park near the Tennessee River. This park would have had 250 to 400 spaces for RVs. However, many New Hope residents didn't want the land to be changed for this commercial use. A petition was passed around to stop the project. By July 2023, the land for the RV park was "back on the market," meaning the plans to build it were stopped.
