New Market is a community in Madison County, Alabama, United States. It's called a "census-designated place" (CDP) because the government counts its population, even though it's not an official city. New Market is part of the larger Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. In 2020, about 1,543 people lived there. Even though it was one of the first places settled in Madison County, New Market has never officially become a town.

History of New Market
In the early 1800s, people from Tennessee started exploring the land that would become Madison County in Alabama. In 1804, Isaac and Joseph Criner settled in the northern part of the area, near what is now called the Mountain Fork of the Flint River.
George Smith, who owned the land where New Market is today, built the first log house and started a store in 1814. Later, in 1819, John Miller built a gristmill (for grinding grain) and a sawmill. The people who settled there later gave the community the name "New Market."
On January 30, 1966, New Market recorded the coldest temperature ever in Alabama: -27 degrees Fahrenheit (which is about -32 degrees Celsius).
Several important places in New Market are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special and protected because of their history. These places include the New Market Historic District, New Market Presbyterian Church, New Market United Methodist Church, and the Whitman-Cobb House. New Market is also home to the Mount Paran Cemetery, a historic graveyard where many early settlers, like Isaac Criner and John Miller, are buried. This cemetery is recognized by the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
Geography of New Market
New Market is located in the northeastern part of Madison County. It is about 17 miles (27 km) northeast of Huntsville and about 6 miles (10 km) south of the Tennessee border.
The community covers an area of about 45.5 square kilometers (17.6 square miles). Only a small part of this area, about 0.08 square kilometers (0.03 square miles), is water. The Mountain Fork of the Flint River flows through the northern part of New Market. To the east, you can see Backbone Mountain and other smaller mountains that are part of the Cumberland Plateau. These mountains rise about 800 feet (240 meters) above the town.

New Market first appeared in the U.S. Census in 1880, with 144 residents. It wasn't counted again for 110 years! In 1990, it was listed again as a census-designated place (CDP).
In 2010, there were 1,597 people living in New Market. Most residents were White (88.5%), with smaller percentages of Black or African American (6.7%), Native American (1.4%), and Asian (0.2%). About 4.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
The population was spread out by age. About 22.9% were under 18 years old, and 12.3% were 65 years or older. The average age was about 41 years old.
As of the 2020 United States census, the population of New Market was 1,543 people.
Public Services in New Market
The Madison County Water Authority provides water service to the New Market area. However, sewer service is not available. Huntsville Utilities provides electricity to the community.
The Madison County Sheriff's Department helps keep the community safe and maintains law and order. The New Market Volunteer Fire Department protects the area from fires.
