History of New Providence
New Providence was first started in 1855.
The city faced some tough times early on. A tornado hit New Providence in 1860. Later, in 1910, a large fire burned down much of its business area.

Education in New Providence
New Providence is part of the Eldora–New Providence Community School District. This school district was created in 1980 when the Eldora and New Providence school districts joined together.
As of 2019, this district works with the Hubbard–Radcliffe Community School District. Together, they are known as "South Hardin Schools."
Water Tower Incident
In July 2000, a water tower was being built in New Providence. During its construction, the tower collapsed. This accident was shown on the Discovery Channel TV series Destroyed in Seconds.
