Former Volkswagen Plant
From 1978 to 1988, Volkswagen of America had a large factory nearby called the Westmoreland Assembly Plant. This plant made popular cars like the Volkswagen Rabbit, Golf, and Jetta.
When car sales went down, Volkswagen closed the plant in 1988. The state of Pennsylvania then bought it.
Sony's Manufacturing Facility
In 1990, Sony took over the old Volkswagen plant. They started making televisions there. At its busiest, the factory employed over 6,000 people. By the late 1990s, it still had over 3,000 workers. However, by 2007, only 250 people worked there. Sony closed the facility in 2008.
UPS Sorting Center
UPS has a very large package sorting center in New Stanton. This center is huge, covering about 49.6 acres. It processes around 500,000 packages every day during normal times. During busy times, like November and December, it can handle up to 1,000,000 packages daily! About 1,700 people work here.
SuperValu Distribution Center
SuperValu also has a large grocery distribution center in New Stanton. It is about 724,000 square feet (67,260 square meters) in size.
