Youngwood's History
Youngwood was first settled in 1899. It was built on land that belonged to a farmer named John Y. Woods. The town's name, Youngwood, comes from combining John Y. Woods's last name with his mother's father's name, which was Young.
The town grew because of the Pennsylvania Railroad. This railroad had a branch that ran from Greensburg south to Uniontown. In 1900, a very large area was built for sorting railroad cars. This "classification yard" was a big part of Youngwood's economy for many years.
Youngwood officially became a borough on November 10, 1902. The railroad station, built in the same year, is still standing on Depot Street today.
