New Windsor is a small town in Carroll County, Maryland, United States. In 2020, about 1,441 people lived there. The town is known for being the home of Clyfford Still, a famous painter, for many years.

History of New Windsor

New Windsor was first planned out in 1797. It was originally called Sulphur Springs. This name came from a local spring whose water people thought could help with health problems.

How New Windsor Got Its Name

The town got its current name, New Windsor, in the early 1800s. It might have been named after Windsor in England.

Early Days and the Springs

New Windsor was first started to serve people traveling on wagon trails. But soon, the sulfur springs themselves became a reason for people to visit. To make money from these visitors, the town built a bathhouse and many inns. One of these was the large Dielman Inn.

Colleges and Schools in New Windsor

In 1850, Calvert College opened in New Windsor. It later became New Windsor College in 1872. Then, from 1912 to 1937, it was a campus for Blue Ridge College.

The New Windsor State Bank

During the Great Depression, on September 3, 1932, the New Windsor State Bank opened. It is still open today! The bank's first building on Main Street has special features like imported marble and a painted mural. Today, it is called NWSB Bank.

Church of the Brethren and Peace Corps

Since 1944, New Windsor has been a main center for the international work of the Church of the Brethren. This included their Heifer Project, which later became Heifer International. These efforts helped inspire the Peace Corps, a group that helps people around the world. The first director of the Peace Corps, Sargent Shriver, had connections to this area.

In 2017, the former Blue Ridge College campus was sold to Shanghai Yulun Education Group. It reopened as Springdale Preparatory School.

The main way to travel to and from New Windsor is by car. Two main roads serve the town: Maryland Route 31 and Maryland Route 75.

  • Maryland Route 31 goes northeast to southwest. It connects New Windsor to Westminster and Libertytown.
  • Maryland Route 75 starts at MD 31 in New Windsor. It goes west to Union Bridge and then turns south towards Libertytown.
