History of Newburg
Newburg was started in 1883 by the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway. It was an important stop for trains. Here, train engines would get fixed, and new crews would take over. Today, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad still uses it for maintenance. You can see many railroad materials along the tracks.
Early Industry: Iron Works
People tried to make iron in Newburg twice. It was a good spot because the railroad made it easy to move heavy goods. The Ozark Iron Works started building in 1867. But the company went out of business in 1877. Later, in 1880, the Knotwell Iron Company tried to use the same buildings. However, they soon stopped because iron prices dropped a lot.
Railroad Changes After World War II
After World War II, trains started using diesel fuel instead of coal. Diesel engines could travel much longer distances without stopping. Because of this, the Newburg train stop closed in the 1960s. The buildings where trains were repaired, like the roundhouse and turntable, were removed. Today, only one old "Frisco" caboose remains near where the freight yards used to be.

Geography of Newburg
Newburg is located on the north side of the Little Piney Creek. This area is a "floodplain," which means it's a flat land next to a river that might flood sometimes. The St. Louis–San Francisco Railway tracks run along the southern edge of the city.
The city covers about 0.62 square miles (1.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.
Newburg and Route 66
Newburg is close to the old U.S. Route 66, which is now State Highway T. Route 66 was a famous road for travelers. Even though Interstate 44 now bypasses it, some old buildings from the Route 66 era are still there. These include:
- The Houston House
- John's Modern Cabins, which used to be a tourist motel but is now in ruins
- Vernelle's Motel, which still operates, though its restaurant and gas station were removed when Route 66 was made wider in 1957.
