The Story of Newry

How Newry Began

Newry was founded by a man named Captain William Ashmead Courtenay. He was a brave soldier in the Civil War. Later, he became the mayor of Charleston, South Carolina. In 1893, Captain Courtenay and some other people started a company. It was called the Courtenay Manufacturing Company.

They bought a large piece of land, about 350 acres, next to the Little River. They built a dam on the river. This dam helped power a big factory called a mill. The mill started making cotton cloth in June 1894.

Building a Mill Town

Along with the mill, they also built a village for the workers. It had about 50 small houses. People believe Captain Courtenay named the village "Newry" after his family's old home in Ireland. That Newry was also a small factory town.

Between 1893 and 1910, the company owned all the houses. The village grew to about 85 homes. It also had two churches and a building that was both a post office and a company store. The mill made money right away. In its first year, it earned 15% profit for its owners.

Changes Over Time

After Captain Courtenay passed away in 1908, his sons took over the mill. They managed it until around 1920. In 1946, the Courtenay Manufacturing Company joined with other mills. They formed a bigger company called Abney Mills.

Abney Mills kept the Newry mill running. But in 1959, they sold the houses in the village. This meant the people living there could now own their homes. In 1972, a new dam was built, creating Lake Keowee. Sadly, Newry's baseball field was covered by the new lake.

The Mill Closes

In July 1975, Abney Mills closed the Newry mill. Many workers and residents had to leave. They moved to other towns to find jobs at different Abney Mills factories. Because of this, Newry lost many of its residents.
