History of Newstead
Newstead became an official locality in 1963. A locality is a specific area with a name.
The suburb got its name from a large house called "Newstead House". This house was built in 1855 by a person named Ronald Campbell Gunn. In 1919, the house was renamed "Kawallah". However, the people living in the area did not like this new name. They continued to call the area Newstead unofficially. The name "Newstead" became official again in 1961.
