In 2016, a count of people living there, called a census, showed that 4,592 people called South Launceston home. This area is part of the larger Launceston city and also includes smaller areas known as Glen Dhu and Sandhill.

How South Launceston Grew

South Launceston has been officially recognized as a specific area for a long time. It started as a small place called Galvin Town. By the 1890s, it became part of Launceston and was known as South Launceston. In 1906, the area grew even more to include the neighborhood of Sandhill.
