Newtonville is a small community called a hamlet. It is located in the town of Colonie, in Albany County, New York. You can find it along U.S. Route 9. Newtonville is just south of Latham and north of Loudonville. The main building for the town of Colonie, the Town Hall, is also in Newtonville.
History of Newtonville
Newtonville gets its name from an early landowner, John M. Newton. It was first known as Newton Corners. Mr. Newton made bricks, pottery, and stove parts.
He built the First Baptist Church in 1852. Today, this building is the Newtonville Post Office. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special building recognized for its history.
The first post office in Newtonville opened in 1850. It was inside a store owned by John H. Kemp. On October 27, 1887, the father of President Chester A. Arthur, Rev. Dr. William Arthur, passed away in Newtonville.
In the early 1900s, Newtonville was a popular spot. Many guidebooks for people touring in early cars mentioned it. These books included "Scarborough's Official Tour Book" (1918) and "Automotive Blue Book" (1921).
In 1906, David Jeram started a bus line. His "Loudonville Autobus" used an 18-passenger Knox bus. It traveled between Latham's Corners and Albany. Newtonville was one of its stops.
Later, some historic buildings were moved to Newtonville. In 1987, the Buhrmaster Barn was moved here. It was built in the 1800s near the Mohawk River. It now sits at the site of the historical museum, the Pruyn House. In 1997, the Verdoy Schoolhouse was also moved to this location.
Besides the Post Office, Pruyn House, and Verdoy Schoolhouse, the Newtonville School and Newtonville United Methodist Church are also on the National Register of Historic Places.
Geography of Newtonville
Newtonville is mainly located around where Maxwell Road and US Route 9 (New Loudon Road) meet. Since it's a hamlet, its exact borders can be a bit unclear.
Generally, Newtonville stretches north on Route 9. It goes up to where Old Loudon Road meets it, which is where Latham begins. It also extends west on Maxwell Road to include parts of Old Niskayuna Road.
