About Ngarkat Conservation Park
Ngarkat Conservation Park was officially created on 13 September 1979. The main reason for setting it up was to protect the important mallee heath environment. This habitat is home to many different plants and animals.
The park is managed by the Department for Environment and Water. They work to keep the park healthy and safe for everyone.
How the Park Grew
Over time, Ngarkat Conservation Park became much bigger. On 27 May 2004, three other nearby conservation parks joined it. These were Mount Rescue Conservation Park, Mount Shaugh Conservation Park, and Scorpion Springs Conservation Park.
These smaller parks were then officially closed and became part of Ngarkat Conservation Park. This made the protected area much larger. It helps to protect even more of the natural environment.
What "Protected Area" Means
Ngarkat Conservation Park is classified as an IUCN Category Ia protected area. IUCN stands for the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
A Category Ia protected area is a very strict type of nature reserve. It means the area is mainly for scientific research and protecting wilderness. Human visits are usually limited to make sure the natural environment is not disturbed.
